Dumber still is the calendar where the date of an actual event doesn't even get extracted into the feed. Shoddy.

RE: Website

are there any settings for the RSS Feeds in the admin CP?

RE: Website

So much for using the feeds, would have been nice and simple had it not been for the fact that the forum feeds don't work properly which means I'd have to do a lot of extra coding to use them. Will have to go back to extracting stuff direct from the database but will aim to get some kind of front page up as soon as possible, then we can add to it as and when.

RE: Website

Cheers for the links, never though of making use of the RSS feed, doh, although it can't quite do everything we originally wanted to do, with a bit of scripting we should be sorted. Done some initial testing and looking good, hopefully we'll have something put together soon.

RE: Website

That's a fairly easy process, all things considered. There are a hundred and one websites out there that detail in plain English how to dynamically display RSS feed information on a website.

Here are some examples:

<a href="http://www.zend.com/zend/spotlight/code-gallery-wade6.php" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.zend.com/zend/spotlight/code-gallery-wade6.php

<a href="http://www.feedforall.com/displaying-rss.htm" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.feedforall.com/displaying-rss.htm

<a href="http://www.elixirsystems.com/seo_tips/rss_feeds_website_consuming.php" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.elixirsystems.com/seo_tips/rss_feeds_website_consuming.php

If if gets a little complicated, feel free to get in touch and I'll take a look at it. I haven't written any HTML or any other code for a couple of years now, but from reading those websites above, it shouldn't take too much playing around with.

RE: Website

OddSmitty (28/06/2006)

Reign-Mack (28/06/2006)
does anybody have experience with RSS feeds. the entire forum generates them so it would not be hard to create a dynamic front page thats looks like the original template.

In what way are you trying to incoporate the RSS feed into the front page? At least we could have a bit about the site, who we cater for, forum guidelines etc etc.

I'll have a look at using the RSS feeds too, there's probably some scripts out there we could use/convert.

Great ideas, cheers.

RE: Website

I'm a complete 'tard when it comes to anything net or programming related. I'm not so sure if a full-blow website is needed, for the reviews and such I mean because, well lets face it we can't compete with the likes of Gamespot and IGN can we?

The only thing that is slightly off putting is if you put the URL in and you come straight to a forum, maybe just a simple page, explaining what myxbox is all about would be nice to start with? Containing a link to the forums, and maybe some information about any tournaments or whatever is going on at that time?

Website

For those of you not about at the time we used to have a fully featured website as well as the old forums, but the feeling was that it made the place too disjointed and a lot of the features that were on the site just weren't being used because community members naturally gravitated towards the forums first. We were always primarily a community of gamers, the website came later but because we already lived on the forums it never really worked.

So the last time we had a makeover, just prior to the 360 launch was to do away with all that and basically run everything through the forums, but have a front end with sections for Xbox 360, Xbox and PC where stuff from the appropriate forums and such things as the calendar would be pulled onto those pages.

Unfortunately for various reasons this part of the development never actually happened, although in recent weeks Reign Mack has been working on the template but it now needs cobbling together, nick72 is a bit busy at the moment so I'm not sure when that will happen, unless we have any other asp.net coders amongst us, I'm not that confident in .net to really undertake doing it myself.

Any thoughts or .net coders lurking out there who are able to help?
