wouldnt mind a cod 4 tourny, 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 on hardcore search & destroy, 5 or 10 min time limit, on 1 map for first rnd, then nuvva map for next then nuvva map for final ? always seems to be enuf playing it every night ??

I missed this thread.

Easiest to organise is time trials or high score tables, like on PGR and Forza, The Club, DMC4, COD4 (arcade mode), anything else is just a games night really.

I enjoyed the PGR3 tourney, so if we get one for 4 going that will be cool.

When the site was updated Chas didn't keep on the tournament admins, the reason being that although we were trying to get tourneys going, getting members to commit to even a one night event was very difficult. I used to do the FPS side of it and Chas will tell you I did try.

Groove and Big Mean Bunny were also involved, but gave up and have since dissapeared from the site. Groove did get some great games going with Forza though, setting up a race with a specified car each week, modded and tuned to your hearts desire.

We all have commitments and most have families so we all understand, but if you all try where possible to get involved I'm sure that Chas would be more then thrilled to set up something a little more permanent.

Lo Lads,

I am currently off-line for gaming - but will hopefully be back soon and wouldn't mind organising something again. The PGR tourney died a death last time with I think only 2 people posting a time by the last round - which imo spolt it for the eventual winner who had put in the effort throughout.

Time/Trial based toruneys - are very good for people on different work/family patterns as people can post times when they have a moment - much less social though (although room for banter on the forums) - however, as the event goes on, the guys way out of contention tend to lose interest.

As someone suggested - maybe keep em short and snappy to ensure this doesn't happen.

Ladders look like an excellent idea - especially sports titles (could work well as a multi-game ladder also). The simplest ladder format is where you can only challenge say the 3 people above you in the ladder - and if you beat them you leap-frog them - working your way up until you are the top boy. Once at the top you can't decline challenges from the 3 guys below you (subject to agreeing a suitable time obviously).

Full blown toruneys that require a lot of people on at the same time are easily the most social (and usually most fun), but if you were going down that route - I would tend to try and keep the participents limited to those that can definately commit time to completing the tourney, as it only takes a handful of stragglers to grind the tourney to a halt for everyone.

It aint much fun organising it all when you can't get involved yourself - but once I get back on-line as said I'd be up for sorting something out. In the meantime - you guys may kick something off - if you need help setting it up, or with ideas on how best to run it - I'll help out

Hi guys. I think there are quite a few good ideas being thrown around this thread.
I'd def prefer one-offs too, even though I'm on Live most nights.
It's probably easier to get more people who can't commit to ongoing tournaments. I'm game though... (lousy pun, I know)

plus youve only got to look at the peeps who post i bet their is only about 10 of us who would bother.

Having arranged games nights is definitely something we should do a bit more, as you guys have said it would get us playing some different games, but on the downside you have the danger of people not turning up (only 3 of us for Sega Rally, although you can still have some fun, but obviously not with Sega Rally as it's rubbish ) but if we keep holding them regularly maybe we'll get more interested and actually turning up.

Having said that it doesn't mean tournaments/ladders don't have their place, they're a different animal altogether really, catering for peoples more competitive nature as apposed to gaming nights which are more about getting together and having a laugh. Both have their place.

I found your idea of doing an overall game ladder an interesting one Pa1n and there's no reason why it wouldn't work, It doesn't really matter what game people compete in as long as the competitors agree everything beforehand and you get a result then the win or loss can be submitted to the ladder.

I've dug out a ladder script, it needs a bit or work as it was coded originally for a golf game, but I think with a bit of work I could use it to run any number of ladders at the same time, not that we need that many but it's something I'll work on when I get a bit of time.

No reason why we can't also run a few one off tournaments on a particular night, plenty of scope to do things. Arranging games/torunaments it is one area where things have been a bit lax. But with all your ideas and input I'm sure we can get something working.

For me its more the taking part and having a chat and a laugh with friends, and actually getting to play varied games, instead of playing the same games night in and out. I'm with SJ on this one, game arrangements do seem a better idea.

Plenty of games to choose from . I Havent got sega rally tho .

Not that I am being cynical or the like, but realistically, unless someone is prepared to put some ongoing effort into a league/tournament, this is not going to happen.

IMO it would be more realistic to start with a few scheduled game nights, such as PGR 4, GRAW 2, GOW, R6V etc. It doesn't have to be all night, just a couple of hours and see where it goes from there.

As always, leading from the front and setting the standards, Sega Rally was a case in point last night. A few hours, some good races, some chat, perfect.

Perhaps a overall game ladder. That way it probably would be more competitive. Some people are better at some games than others?. Also it would keep it fresh and more interesting.

God knows how we could make that one work, was thinking out loud tbh. But it would give everyone a chance to get all those old games out and get abit more moneys worth out of them?.

Theres so many good games about to play.

Cod4 ( Obviously ) > PGR4 > Forza 2 > Pro Evo > Gears of war > GRAW2 > etc etc.

Perhaps more thought needed with this suggestion ? lol

There's lots of opportunities to run some tournaments and I like the sound of the ladders, you could perhaps even do that for Pro Evo. Whatever we do though I think we need to keep it simple and short. I seem to remember towards the end people lost interest in stuff like the PGR TTs once people realised they couldn't compete and maybe weren't as dedicated as some of you others they drifted off. So maybe if we took one game at a time and ran something for a maximum of say 4 weeks then we'd get to play some different games and hopefully keep the interest up. No reason why we couln't have a few one of tournaments/knockout compos or whatever.

Ladders I suppose are a bit different and could be run for longer, but again if we reset them every few months to keep them fresh. I've got some ladder scripts somewhere I'll see what we can use.

Anyone else got some more thoughts before we go off and half heartedly try and set something up, not get much response then forget about it all again .

yes Pain, i was thinking along the lines of a time trial because you can dip in and out as it suits your work/tv/family commitments. it will also breath life into Forza/PGR4 as they are so deep in dust they are starting to fossilise along with my other games. a Top Spin ladder would be good, at least i know Fezza would be interested. a golf tourny as well, either Tiger Woods or Links. and no Chas, i wasn't volunteering, more a case of me standing still while everyone else took a step backwards. organising the Pro Evo league was like pulling teeth at times. i had hair like MG before i organised it...

The tournaments section wasn't/isn't just for racing games although that's about all we used it for apart from Pro Evo but with the live problems with that maybe not a good idea to do another compo for that for the time being, but thre's plenty of other games we could do stuff for, but lack of interest always seemed to be the main problem.

Badz' PGR3 tournament was going well until the new racing games came out - I would enjoy some time trial events for those times when I can't get online at the same time as the regulars.

They are ideal for those of us who don't play every night.

For me its the lack of being able to commit to a given time m8 . But I also think its due to the lack of anyone organising such a event. If it was a time trials event of sorts. I'd definately be up for some of that .
