The only programs I'm running now are. AVG free, Spybot S&D, Adaware, and Windows Vista Firewall. All recommondations from you guys.

I'm alot more happy with how my pc is performing on Vista Using these apps. The Security I was using before stopped me doing so much. And was extremely hard to configure. So thanks everyone for you're recommendations and information. Much appreciated .

Yup, looks like ur stealthed, which is good if you're not running any services.

Now you just have to worry about virii, trojans, email borne junk, port-knocking and a million other things that the firewall won't stop.

One thing worth noting: Hardware Firewalls stop / question all inbound connections, software firewalls tend to stop / question connections in both directions.

The DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) is an area outside your Firewall (or with most / all ports open) that is still on your LAN.

The old XBox worked best in the DMZ, because putting it behind the firewall caused the scket conflicts that meant that random players could not hear one another.

I followed the Sheilds Up Link and it found that basically my pc did not exist and did not give away one packet of information. And passed all the Stealth tests. So does this mean I can relax abit now? .

Pa1n, that router has a built in firewall so any kind of software or having windows firewall enabled is pointless. You can check how secure your PC ports are at the Shields Up webby. As long as you don't/haven't put your PC in a DMZ you'll be fine.

I only use free AV software, I find them a lot better and more user friendly than bought products.

I'm using Avast! for antivirus, Spybot S&D, Adaware, and SpywareBlaster for spyware. Also, if you need one, CCleaner is a good registry cleaner.

I was trying to install that free zonealarm. I used it on XP and liked it very much. But during the install process on vista. A error occured. And it stopped the installation process, which left half of a zonealarm install on my pc. Which was very hard to try and clean up afterwards .

depends on what firewall you had before and what you are trying to connect to ?? the MS firewall is alot better than nothing plus it stops things going either way, where as the Xp firewall was only a one way firewall.

make sure you have all the updates from the ms website and give it another go.

Downloaded and Installed AVG today. Because I did eventually find that the antivirus I had was causing all my connectivity issues.

I did try and install the free zonealarm. But when I was installing I had a error message, something along the lines of Vista stopped Vector services from making changes in C ++.

So currently Im running AVG and windows firewall. I'd really like a working firewall for peice of mind. Do people think windows firewall is adequate. Also Im unsure wether my router ( Linksys WRT54G ) has a built in firewall???.

I was in the same boat as you, i have built a xp machine from scratch and on this pc i use AVG (well recommended) and zone alarm Pro (it is brilliant for playing games as it has a in built game function that just gets rid of all the alerts)

I brought a Vista Laptop pre loaded with Mcafee (which only lasted 30 days) but now on this i use AVG Free edition and Zone Alarm.

they are both free !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AVG is just install and forget it does all the work for you, but zonealarm i chose to do the manual setup (you tell it what to let through the fire wall) and after the initial couple of days the warnings seem to disappear as it's got used to the programs on your computer..

yeah it is compatible with vista , i have it running on Vista Home Premium

i think you may need a patch ... not sure , probably best to just ignore all of this post ... lol although you could just put your nod32 on vista , it should work , it does on mine lol

AVG.

Very good AV solution, and free.

Windows Firewall is fine, although a bit fiddly, and free.

Spybot S&D and Adaware finish the set, also both free.

Windows Defender... does this do anything??? I don't know, which is why I use the two malware tools above.

AVG from Grisoft is a cracking little tool, as said above, and the best bit of course is it's free!!!

i couldn't get on with that Onecare thing at all, i d/loaded the trial version and it made my lappie freeze all the time, i had to do a system restore after deleting the bugger. might be designed for Vista really, despite being advertised as SP2 friendly...

there are so many anti virus out there,like nod32 kasp, etc which are all godd progs in there own right i sweared by zonealarm ,but it was so intense and when pc gaming it was a problem but everythinh else was fine im like the rest of the guys have router and ihave avg suite with its own firewall and i play guildwars alot and not a problem

I'm EXACTLY the same, stick with my router for firewalling and use AVG for my antivirus needs. I'm running Vista Ultimate and have no issues

I have Windows Live Onecare running which is Microsoft's own firewall/antivirus/phishing solution.

I have had no issues with it but I guess the sceptics will always diss anything by Microsoft.

I first heard about this when I first got Vista but at the time it was only available in the United States so I couldn't purchase the full version.

By chance I saw it on the shelf in a PC World a few months ago and have been using it ever since.

It also runs on Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Hi all,

I'm currently running windows Vista Premium. I'm looking for a good antivirus+firewall. Which is actually reliable and not paranoid at the same time. The Internet security software I run at the moment ( Panda Internet Security 2007 ) is not very good at all. I mainly use my pc for playing games nowadays. But this is hampered by a extremely annoying firewall which hates Punkbuster. Which sadly runs on most online games that I play.

Could anyone recommend a Good Antivirus+firewall which is vista compatible?.

I have such a game getting games to work online sometimes I feel like pulling my hair out. I'm even contemplating buying a new HD and installing Windows XP on it.
