I bought mass effect and at first, every time i put the disc in it came up with a white screen saying "to play this game put it into a xbox 360". but after a few attempts it eventually played. After about 15hours of play the disc refused to read past the menus. It kept on coming up saying "unreadable disc". I swapped the disc twice but exactly the same thing keeps happening. I even spent £7 on a dvd lens cleaner but that didn't help either. I ended up just getting a credit note from the shop. At first it was only that game, but it has now started to happen more and more with my other games.

I guess i'm just going to have bite the bullet and send my box back

at least i'll catch up with some of the jobs that i've been putting off around the house

RE: Failing DVD drive?

If your drive does decide to die a replacement drive will cost about £30 if you try doing it yourself my dvd tray wouldnt work on my old 360 it would try to shut then open slightly stopping anything loading up at all i contacted MS and they wanted to charge me so i bought a new drive of ebay and read up on how to copy the firmware key from original drive to another as a replacement drive as it wouldnt just simply plug in and work ....anyhow after i open the 360 took the old drive mostly apart o check it and rebuilt it then worked fine

I doubt that would sort out your problem just saying about me happening to sort out my dodgy drive myself thats all

RE: Failing DVD drive?

Well at least it's not making bad disc damaging sounds! My drive seems to keeping dropping in speed - then speeding back up again then slowing down as if struggling to read. Only started day or two ago and seems to be happening on Mass Effect (brand new disc). Anyone else has this problem with the drive or strange happenings on Mass Effect. Will try some other games out at length to see. Haven't played much else as COD seems to be giving me a bit of grief at the moment (was not ignoring all the invites Mon night just got connection errors all the time!).

And can you use the HD-DVD add on drive for games? If my drive is on the way out then buying one of these at the moment would be cheaper than a repair,

Cheers
