| | wow, thats some price drop. is this the beginning of the end for xbox360 or has m$ made enough money on the consoles that they can now give them away and make their money from software? With gta4 showing the limits of the hardware i wonder how long the console will last. I think Gears of War 2 will be the peak of how far we can get.
Just when i thought i was in they threw me back out. |

MS doesn't make money from the consoles, however they do want to retain/grow their making share by making the 360 a compelling proposition than the PS3. Unless you are a "hardcore" gamer it is unlikely you will have both, and with very few exclusive games its a no brainer, unless of course you want blueray. I wouldn't expect to see any new MS console launched for at least 3 years!

| | certainly the xbox appears to have an extended longevity, and is already pretty old in console terms, and a lot of that is down to live - they have a lot of people locked in. I think that you're right and we probably won't see a replacement anytime soon, probably 3 years like you say. But technology has a habit of taking huge leaps very quickly.

| whooaaa Steam, i'd hardly say GTA4 is testing the 360 to the limit, sure maybe in content but no way in graphics, they are pretty simple, or physics, nothing we havn't seen nbefore. there are far better looking and playing games such as COD4 and Gears of War, and i don't know if you've seen any footage of Star Wars Force Unleashed but that looks amazing and the physics really do look like there pushing the 360. as for longevity i agree, the 360 will be here for at least two years...
who says you can't polish a turd... |

I think you'll find GTA IV is rather primitive once you look past the excellent production - Oblivion gives the 360 more to think about.

| | gears of war, cod4 and assassins creed all had amazing graphics, environments and character models, but they all come with a compromise - loading screens and restricted playing areas. Gears definately pushed the xbox360, when things got busy you saw some slow down. Assassins Creed had limited gameplay and a lot of repetition of character models and slow down. Cod4 limits you to corridors and set piece animations. GTA4 is a full blown city and in order to achieve that you have to compromise with the graphics. I think liberty city is an amazing achievement, with sights and sounds that really feels like a city, and does the job without any slow down. Just because the graphics aren't all that doesn't mean the game isn't pushing the box. The xbox360 could never do gears of war graphics and the scale of gta4. Its all about compromise. I think that GTA4 shows the limits of the console by not having kick ass graphics. Sometimes tthough the graphics might just be a style choice - such as crackdown.

| I just don't see my 360 working very hard with GTA IV - the graphics aren't particularly high polygon - there isn't exactly a lot being drawn at any one time - you can't do much in terms of interacting with the environment other than knocking stuff over - the scripted scenes all load in before they play. The 360 is out for a brisk walk or perhaps a jog rather than running flat out here. If you want a compromise - check out Oblivion - bigger world than GTA IV and more detailed graphics - that is what is called giving the 360 a bit of workout.
